11/11/2017· Before pulling the caps, set up a dial indior on the headstock casting and let the dti touch the flange on the spindle. Next take a long bar and insert in the spindle and pick up about 25-50 lbs and see how much the indior moves. Be a good idea to use a tenths reading indior. Ideal reading is around 0.0015 to .0020" movement.

Tormach Slant Lathe > Spindle adjustment - IndustryArena

5/11/2018· Re: Spindle adjustment. I can provide some information on the bearing used in the Tormach lathe. There are two matched sets, both NSK. Front (near spindle) are 7012 and rear is 7013. These come as matched sets and are grade 5 (beefy for this small a lathe) . The only adjustment is preload through a compression nut.

bearing headstock lathes appear quite disproportionate because of this. Then there''s speed, I have yet to see a 3 1/4" spindle bore lathe fitted with plain bearings that ran higher than 425 rpm. Yet I''ve owned lathes with 4 1/8" spindle bores that ran up to 1500 rpm.

Adjusting Myford spindle bearings | Model Engineer

31/5/2015· It''s a two stage adjustment. The bearing position is set by the rings but bearing pre load is set by the nut on the end. So each time the bearing position is moved to pull the front cone in the nut on the end needs slackening off first. Bearing position adjusted and then the bearing pre load re applied.

Spindle bearing adjustment | Model Engineer

14/5/2016· Adjustment is done when they are at a warm temperature after running and are set for preload to give a defined bearing torque. In the case of similar bearing, in a Harrison M300 this is 0.9/1.1Nm (= 160mm chuck with string to give a 1.14/1.36Kg load) with spindle just turning as the spring balance is pulled away.

Lathe Spindle Takeup Adjustment – The Smell of Molten …

15/7/2009· Lathe Spindle Takeup Adjustment. After un-jamming the 3-jaw chuck, I decided it was long past time to remove the accumulated slop in the lathe spindle. Modern lathes have a thrust bearing, usually with tapered needles or some such fancy arrangement. This lathe was shipped in 1928, has hulking brass bearings, and a nut to remove the slop.

28/9/2020· My next thought was to run the lathe for an hour or so to get it warm and press on the spindle with the tailstock (it''s a very beefy MT4) while making another adjustment. Then, with the lathe at the lowest speed (28 rpm), rap the spindle with a dead blow to get the things settling in, then run the spindle at medium speed while checking temp rise.

19/12/2018· Release locking screw in the adjusting nut. Using pin spanner provided with lathe, adjust the nut clockwise to increase preload. As overtightening will shorten bearing life, work in small (3mm at nut periphery) increments. After each incremental adjustment run spindle for a few minutes & re-check drag torque.

Tips for adjusting spindle bearing preload on a lathe - Page 2

5/1/2022· You then turn the spindle by hand and note the increase in torque as the spindle bearings are tightened. It will transition from very easy to turn to a slight resistance to turning. The preload is about right once the resistance is noticed. This needs to be done after the lathe head stock has warmed up.
